      Help required please.

I am trying to locate a replacement set of plans for a 2inch Fowler 16 nhp 2 speed ploughing engine TE20. I have originals by John Haining but badly water damaged, dated 3/11/80 . I have tried contacting various sources like Neil Tyler@mach tech, mj engineering, black gates, Ekp supplies. Have had no joy at all. Any help or info that may assist would be much appreciated.

      Thanks in advance Bob Page

Are you sure Blackgates could not help, possibly depends on who you asked as they may have it listed under “class V” . Certainly in one of their paper catalogues that I have along with some castings but is about 10yrs old.

I just had a look at Sarik who took over the old MAP then Myhobbystore drawings but thay don’t list it either.

The other option would be to get hold of the old ME articles which span a couple of volumes as the drawings are in that.

This used to be sold by Brunell model engineering about 15 years ago when I tried to buy a set of castings etc, but the then owner, Graham Howard, couldn’t be bothered to supply the parts bought and paid for. Look back in the history on the ME.

If brave then might be able to get drawings and castings from them.

Contained in ME 1980 vols 146/7 and 8.

Hi Bob, I think the model engineer volumes you need are from volume 146 Dec 1980 through vol 147, 1981 and the first half of 1982 vol 148.

An interesting model, Haining converted an export wood burner to a UK spec coal burner. He mentions intending to supply the export tender drawing later in the magazine series but never did. He also wonders why the firebox is so large. The real engine does not have a Church valve.

              Superba gears are the same.

I don’t think I have seen any traction or ploughing engines done with the flat tank and basket arrangement, it would make a bit of a change. Could even go to a straw burner and have the working feed arrangement. Might all have to go that way if coal becomes a problem to source.

Though if you did an export one you would really have to do a canopy which makes it a bit harder to drive the model.

Talking of gears none of Hainings are really correct as he uses the same DP throughout but a lot of Fowlers had smaller on the crank and getting larger as they got to the final drive.

Strictly speaking Haining’s are approximations just like Minnie. I’ve got a Universal plough or side drum mod for Minnie 3/4 designed which mixes Burrell with a bit of Fowler + some guess work.

If anyone’s wondering the odd looking rear wheels are the remains of Bottrills big flat wooden feet.

Thanks Bob, I did try Brunell some time last year but like you they let me down. Plans that were ordered and paid for never arrived. I have got photo copies of various relevant pages from ME but would ideally like to replace the originals. Thanks for the assistance.

                    regards Bob
