Hi Gents, I’m doing a little research on the next project I want to tackle (feasibility study). I’m keen on designing a exhaust over intake type engine like the early F-type heads the earliest Harleys used. I have found drawings for the frame and cylinders and a number of initial patents, does anyone on this group have any more information on these bikes not available on the net? I’m looking for the original designs/ drawings or even pictures of someone that has restored one of these. I’ll do my own CAD, simulations and optimization etc.

Hopper is probably your man, not seen him posting so much recently but you might try messaging him.

He has posted images of old F-type engines on HMEM forum in the past.

Are you going model or full size!

          Hi Jason,

Thanks I’ll drop him a message.

I haven’t decided yet, it depends on the casting weight of the cylinders. I’m tempted to go full scale, it’ll actually be easier because you can use off road rims, and bicycle components for the starter etc. This is what I did when I restored my 1925 RE.

          Early days still…

Hi, don’t know if you need exclusively HD info, or IOE in general?

I have 1.5 x 1915 Royal Enfields, 425cc, 3hp IOE V twins, with various engine parts already dismantled in the garage/workshop. I’m in West Yorks.

            If that’s any help?

            Cheers

The book Inside Harley-Davidson by Jerry Hatfield is still available and might be helpful if you don’t already have it.  It has two chapters covering the F-heads that runs for 77 pages with lots of comments and pictures.

              Hope this helps,

              Byron

Hi Keith, the Harleys were a little different, but thanks for the offer. I really appreciate it. I’ve found drawings for the cylinder, frame and tank. the cylinders have been modelled and I’m looking at how I’m going to scale and cast them. Its relatively easy to work out the rest of the bike from pictures and patents. Incidentally your bike looks amazing, that would be a lovely restoration project. I loved restoring my 1925 RE, had to cast and make most of the parts, but was loads of fun! I wasn’t very popular with the restorers here!

Thanks Byron, I’ll see if I can track down the book for a reasonable price! Unfortunately, from experience the information is very seldom more than what can be found on the ‘interweb’ or a good University portal (that’s normally where these authors get their info, that and if they’ve actually restored one, which is unlikely). These books don’t normally give GA’s, or part specific pictures etc.
