Hi all

Progressing well with my Southam shunter and I need some information . Can anybody tell me which issue of Model Engineering Magazine refers to the motor and controller used in this engine.

Yes I have tried the index page but it only seems to go up to 2014. I think Southam was featured in 2016 but I do not want to have to buy twelve back issues just to find what motor to use.

Hello Mike,

The last instalment was delayed, Diane says it will be in the next issue.

The motor I used was from a scrapped 80W 12V Shurflo shower unit , I just replaced the corroded front bearing. Something like this would be ideal, but you can buy a Shurflo pump for half that! I suggest shopping around for surplus motors. Ebay is swamped by small high-speed motors, you need a hefty one rated at about 80 watts 3,000rpm.

I'm I made my own bespoke controller.

The relatively low current (stall current 8A on the original) will make an expensive high-power controller a bit OTT. If you search eBay for "reversible 12V motor controller" you will find a lot of suitable candidates.

This one should do the job, and the controls are suitable for making a simple remote handset:

Thanks for info. I have purchased the controller so just the motor to sort. I will get the next issue of model engineer and see whats inside.

Never knew such small motors could be so dear ! Could buy a 1/2 hp motor for that price.

Parkside railways do a motor very similar to the one Neil has linked to, it is only £70. This is the one used in my 3 1/2 class 08, it is intended to be axle hung on 5" axels. Hope this helps.

I can't find the Shurflo pump with my motor, it seems to have been replaced and the new units only have 4.5A 55W motors instead of 7A 80W ones.

The new pumps can cost as little as about £39 if you shop around.

You could ask a campervan/caravan/narrowboat hire company if they have any junked pumps. The problem is always the front bearing. That's how I got my two motors as my stepson used to maintain narrowboats before he moved onto warships!
