My long time halogen floodlight (300 Watt) over the drive has died and will have to be replaced with a LED unit – what wattage/lm should I be looking for?

I generally go by 10% of the Halogen so a 30W would be about right.

Make sure you get a lamp from one of the major lighting companies. A lot of cheap Chinese rubbish is way down on lumens.

Strange you should say that Andrew, I bought some 5 foot led tubes from a well known British manufacturer, (Two word name, they also make motors) 4 failed within a month, Fortunately I kept the receipt, it was rather annoying as it wasn’t easy to access the fittings to do the change over a second time. How do we actually know where any thing is manufactured now days.

As you found out the manufacturer stood by their product and replaced or refunded your lamps. Try that with a no name Chinese supplier!

Virtually all LEDs are manufactured in China and this includes the big Western lighting brands. The difference is in the QA level, and you have had an unfortunate experience.

I am referring to some highly dubious Chinese manufacturers who way over claim lumen output, which was the crux of the OP’s post, hence my warning.

Unlike some poster here, I have direct experience, having been in the lighting business for some 30 years.
