Low speed, sharp tool on centre line Or a thou or two below, Lots of coolant or cutting oil (pumped or hand placed) come off the cut and back out occationally to clear the swarf, bob's your uncle.

I suppose it depends on how big and heavy the end is, and how fast it's running. If it looks like it is starting to bend then stop and use a hacksaw for the last bit. Same thinking as cutting a tree branch with a chainsaw, stop before the saw gets trapped.

Another couple of points:

Speed, about 1/4 of that for normal turning.

Steady feed, keep it cutting.

Al said it's like playing with snakes. Well, if you're working with brass it should hiss like one.

Suds or cutting oil for steel, dry for brass, parafin for aluminium.

Minimise overhang and don't use the tailstock centre.

Sorry, that was more than a couple but it's not as difficult as it sounds. Just go for it. Practice first before doing anything critical.
