I recently acquired a far eastern lathe that came with 8mm tooling.
When I put the lathe tool in the tool post it was above centre height.
Surely it should be below or on centre height so that I don’t have to reduce the thickness of the lathe tool.

Correct. How high above centreline is it? 1/4″ or 6mm tools are the next ones down.

I have the same trouble on my TOS lathe, it will hold 1 1/2″ tools but they are also over centre and I’m limited to only use 1 1/4″ shank tools.

              Hi Eric,

Just another possibility, has the correct toolpost been fitted?   Could you check the size with someone else who has the same lathe?  It’s difficult to comment without knowing the make, model and supplier.

              Regards

The lathe is a conquest super from Chester UK and the tools were supplied with the lathe

                  Hi Eric,
I have just had a look at Chester’s website to see if it specifies the size of the tools included with the lathe. It does not state the size of the tools but shows a quick change tool post. Normally the height of the tool holder can be adjusted on a quick change tool post so I would have thought there would be enough adjustment. If this is not the case try phoning or emailing Chester. I found that when I had a question about my lathe they tried to be helpful but not all of their people seem to be technical.
                  Les.

Its not the QR tool post that one, ideally you will want the 6 or 1/4″ tools which it will run out of power with much the same.

These are 8mm and used on a bigger lathe with no top slide, click on piccy with lathe!

It looks like a case of far east cheap tooling. Using the adage “you get what you pay for” this set was free with the lathe.
The boring bar was on centre height and the parting off tool instead of the shank being 8×8 was made from 10×8 subsequently 2mm too high.

Is the tooling HSS, or carbide, if the former easily cured by grinding, if the latter, you should be able to take a bit of the bottom of the shank/ tool holder.
wont the supplier change them? If not thats a bit poor, a direct swap would be to his advantage, because the smaller tools are proberbly cheaper. Ian S C

Have you tried posting on the forum at the Chester UK website and raised the question there? If not it is worth a go as they normally try to sort things out pretty fast. Usual disclaimer re interests.

                          Cheers

Larry – this thread is 6 years old ! If the original poster hasn't sorted it by now I doubt that he will. What is you reason for bad mouthing Chester ? I've not heard bad reports of them and they do support the forum.
