This PM I managed to break the screw on my Abwood milling machine vise (it sheared where the roll pin goes threw) . Measuring the thread it's 5/8" x 8 tpi acme.

So has any one got an old ML7 lead screw (5/8" x 8 tpi acme.) if it's warn that's OK as I only need approx 10".

      Thank you

      Ian

A Myford leadscrew is LH, is that what you want?

Aah, I never thought of that ! No it will not do the job. Will have to have a rethink.

            Thanks for that info Mike.

Years ago I repaired an old 4" Abwood by turning a new screw, 8 tpi was very simple on my Boxford. Doesn't need to be particularly tight tolerance on thread form, esp. if the nut is a bit worn. I used an HSS tool, hand ground.

I used mild steel which proved entirely serviceable for hobby use, although something like En8 might be a better material.

                    Just an update.

Kingston engineering show the standard length is 5 feet but when I inquired they replied they could supply 6" for £7.50 + £10 p & p + VAT.

But then following Clive's comment I thought yes I have a lathe, milling machine & Google so after a bit of research on the internet and a practice on aluminum I produced a new screw which I'm very happy with.

It was lurking inside that bar the whole time!

That's smart, well done! I didn't put a square on mine, just cross-drilled 1/2" for a tommy bar

The Abwood vise handle is a well designed item, so it would be a shame not to utilise it!
