Hi everybody, I'm working on a project to convert a 3 phase pedestal drill to a single phase for my home workshop, the single phase motor I bought for the job turned out to have a faulty sleeve bearing and I can't find a supplier for a replacement – anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Tried the local rewinding shop in your area?

Is there a reference number on the old bearing, or have you got the dimensions?

As that rating plate makes no mention of Hawker Siddeley, your motor must have been made before the 1968 HS take over of Crompton Parkinson – spare parts off the shelf may be a problem ! The Doncaster factory closed in 2008, after the company was "horse traded" through several owners.

There are other threads on ME relating to these bearings – a search might glean something ? Or you could try here : **LINK** though at least one of the threads on here that gives dimensions suggests that the bearings may not be standard off-the-shelf items. Bowman' s site suggests that "low cost" specials can be made – though "low cost" to industrial users may not meet your definition of "low cost" !

From an industrial viewpoint, I generally regard fractional motors as being disposable – when you add labour cost to bearings cost for an overhaul, it is generally cheaper overall to fit a replacement motor complete. This also means that older, less efficient, motors get replaced with a current spec. energy efficient type.

I've made sleeve bearings for similar motors in the past from bronze and don't recall it being a particularly difficult job. Think they were all different styles.

Usual issue with unobtanium sleeve bearing sizes is being unable to find the right bore in the right OD to fit the housing. Oversize is simple turning job. Undersize can be dealt with by fitting a sleeve. If the bore size is a little over put a slit in the bearing and push into a tighter sleeve to get the size. Slitting works with oilite and wrapped dry bearing bushes too although the dry bearing ones are already split so just need opening out. Up to maybe 40 thou / 1 mm bore reduction is possible. Probably won't last as long as original but should do all a home shop user needs.

Before getting too involved verify that the motor has a thrust bearing inside. Many sleeve bearing ones don't have a proper thrust bearing area being made for running only with the shaft horizontal.

                Clive.

OK thanks everyone for the useful info once again – looks like I'm going to try my hand at making a new bearing / sleeve.

                  Thanks
