      Hello,

I’m currently building the 2 in Durham & North Yorkshire traction engine. Blackgates Engineering have supplied me with the various gears, but can no longer supply the set of 5 compensating gears as the supplier has retired. Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of finished gears.

      Many thanks

      Garry

I've no idea on the size of the gears you need but HPC at Chesterfield have a large selection and their catalogue has a lot of useful information 01246 268080 also, what about DAVAL I haven't their current number but was 0707 2722722. John

Give MJ Engineering a call, Alan can cut gears for most engines although the DNY is not on his list he may be able to help.

I doubt anyone will have the finished bevel gears for the diff off the shelf, you would either have to cut them yourself but they would not be true bevels or maybe get them 3D printed and cast, should be able to run cast on cast if they are done well, final option would be to find a friend with CNC and a 4th axis.

Not sure if MJ can do them and Malcom who used to do them does not do so much now and they don't have the machines for true bevel gears.

Try Brunell engineering. They support both 2 an d 4 inch Durham’s.

Before approaching Brunel I would look up posts on this forum as to the reliability of supply from them.

could try Reliance gears, I've found them cheaper than HPC

Way back in the 60's(?) a gear manufacturer by the name of Muffett, Tunbridge Wells, used to regularly advertise in ME. I had some very nice small gears from them in more recent times – very satisfied customer.

Well, thank you everybody for all the tips. That know gives me a chance to contact these people and find out if they can make the gears for me.

It's a thumbs down from me for Brunell …
