I did purchase a bunch used high speed lathe tool bits from a company in Germany. A lot are marked as H&P. LTD. HYDRA COMO ; H&P. LTD. HYDRA COMAX and H&P. LTD. MULTIC ..?? . I suppose it was an english company but couldn't find any information about this company nor about the HSS tools. Does somebody have some information about the grade and chemical analysis?

      Best Regards

      Lothar

Can't find my book that mentions them but the firm is Hall and Pickles.

My memory is terrible but I recall Hydra refers to a process using hydraulic pressure to improve a tool steel's hardness by squeezing ingots at about 2000 tons per square inch inside a mould – sort of cold forging. COMO refers to Cobalt and Molybdenum, so it's a more expensive grade of HSS like M35. Just a guess, but COMAX might be M42 (that is an HSS alloy containing maximum cobalt.)
