I think the answer to my question is NO, you don't need blotters on diamond wheels, the ones made from aluminium with a diamond coating, but does anyone know differently?

I don't know the official answer but I never use them on aluminium diamond wheels.

No, the blotters are to make sure you don't have any stressed points on a bonded wheel.

+1 , Also provides a means of identifying what type, rpm, abrasive, grain, grade, structure & bond etc. that the wheel consists of.

It's a long time since I did the course, so I've been looking at the HSE Guidelines which have superseded the Abrasive Wheels Reg's under PUWER, and a "plate mounted wheel" is one of the specific exemptions from the use of blotters.

If I've understood the description, a plate mounted wheel is one where the abrasive grains are bonded to a backing plate, and the drive clamping force acts on the plate and not on the abrasive. That seems to describe a bonded diamond wheel pretty much spot on.

Common sense says that a blotter doesn't add anything to the mounting security of this type of wheel, so hopefully I'm reading this right.

Many thanks all, for the answers, I'll ignore the blotters on aluminium backed wheels.
