Small video camera for hydroplane

I require advice on a very small light weight video camera to fit on my flash steam hydroplane.

Have seen one 20grams for about £32 which is around the price give or take a few pounds that I would like to pay.

Like to have it as slim as possible to be able streamline it into the hull body if possible as airflow is critical as to stop it becoming a flying boat.

It would be required to view forward and reverse it later to see the actions of engine and burners at speed.

Vibration, heat and waterproofing are things that it would have to be shielded from always keeping weight to a minimum.

It would only be running for a few minutes.

Any links to suppliers of cheap small video camera appreciated.

Hi Paul

I was wondering if you have considered the 808 keychain cameras. They are cheap and can be velroed on to most things. They contain a lipo battery and record onto an SD card, There are many flavours of this camera and they all look the same from the outside. Heres a review **LINK** and they can be found on ebay by searching for "keychain camera". The cameras are £5 ish but remember you need to buy an SD card and it should be quick like a class 10 card. Recharge them from PC usb socket.

Key chain camera sound like a safe way of doing it, a fiver is not so bad if it gets drowned, or fried.

I'v got a couple of cameras from demolished cell phones, but I haven't worked out what to do with them, as is they probable don't weigh a gram, there's probably something in one of the hacking sites.

I have used md90 with some joy….might be too low res but at the time small robust and light…

We used a 'cheap' small wireless camera on a model aircraft for testing a system to keep the camera's horizon level. Worked quite well and we went on to install a better camera, that was 15 years ago.

Cameras have come a long way since then and cheaper, paste this link into your browser it may give you some ideas

Thanks for all the suggestions the 808 looks interesting but will see what the local model shops waterproof very lightweight camera's is like when he gets it in a few weeks.

Would have liked to have it fitted for next weekends last 2014 runs at Kingsbury but it will have to be for next years attempts.

Windy,

A very simple way to waterproof a 808 camera is to put it inside a transparent surgical glove, or a toy balloon or a 'something for the weekend Sir' . Simply pop the camera inside and tie a knot, just be sure there are no creases across the lens. Good luck

Well I never knew they were optically flat!

Must admit, I might get one of these to fit to locos, 3 1/2 and OO. A cab view running round a ground level track would be ace!

If you fill one of them with a couple of litres of clean fresh water and attach it to the lens of your underwater camera, you can take clear photos in the filthiest river or harbour in visibility conditions where you cannot even see your hand in front of your faceplate.

Just press the clean water filled envelope against the object to be photographed and press the button. They (condoms) are tougher than you imagine.

While you are there take a look at the FPV (full point of view) offerings. I'd imagine that if you fitted out a flash steam hydroplane with a FPV system and used a gyro headset to control the camera you'd get so fully immersed that you'd be dizzy very quickly.

On the main road near where I live a tempory traffic control camera has been fastened to the top of a lamp post with control boxes on the base?

When they have done this before on this lamp post the camera has been a big oblong box type.

This latest is like a small slim torch it looks like it could be of use on a model it's a pity it's so high.

Big Brother everywhere.
