I have an ancient ML7 and have just begun to experience slip between the dive pulley (3) and gear (2) when under load, has anybody experience of this problem and of the cause and cure

Yes, common problem. The pulley should be a shrink fit on the gear.

You will have to take the spindle out, be careful as there are shims under the bearing caps, do not mix these up.

Then strip the spindle and gat the pulley off the gear, clean it up and refit it using some high strength loctite, then put it all back together.

Many thanks to the above, I had a feeling that this was going to involve removing the spindle I've had the lathe 55 years, from new, so I won't worrey if it only happens every 50 years or so.
