Can anyone suggest a supplier of large Dia Ali for 2" scale traction engine wheels , Size is 12" x 6" (300 X 150 ) Old money still works best for measurement.

Or would you recommend steel ?

Errrrrrrr. Why not try one of the sites advertisers. Click on the Noggin End Metals advert on the right. After all they do pay to advertise here and thus support the site.

I know 3/5ths of absolutely nothiong about models and so am unsure if you want 6inch dia x 12inches long or 12inch dia x 6inches long. However Noggin End sell both diameters in 6082 alloy.

6 inch dia is £14 per inch, and 12 inch dia is £60 per inch. HTH.

Presumably you want to make the rims? Sounds an expensive route, unless you trepan the rings out leaving big lumps of ali you can use for other things.

With Aluminium that size and price I would cast them out of scrap.

Shouldn't they be cast iron?

Roll the rim from steel and then weld in some rings to make the legs of the Tee.

Another option if you did want to make them from Ali is to have several rings cut from plate and machine these into individual tees and use the strakes to join them as in full size.

Whats the exact size you need as Blackgates and MJ Eng have alloy castings not too far off that and how many tees to the wheel? whats the engine – 2" Minnie? If so you could get away with the 2" fowler Ali castings like these on my engine

Hi all,

thanks for your responses. I already had a quote from a local supplier but was unsure as to whether the price was good or bad. On checking the above sites then I think they win at £140.

It is a 2" Minnie Jason ,so I'll either trepan the block or chain drill it . At least I'll still have some nice chunks of ally left for other things .

Aluminium Warehouse is best and cheapest supplier for aluminium blanks I can find. After bitter experience with cast ali rims on an Allchin I would go for steel rims. my cast ali rims cracked when riveting the spokes.

Hi Madmike,

I see the advertisers on the site as well as you do .They do support the site with their revenue for advertising and they advertise for a purpose, to make money. While I have no problem whatsoever with that and everyone needs to earn a crust , the price quoted by one on the right of the page is £360 which you may think is good for supporting the site but for a 10 minute trip in the car I can save £120 and support others whose prices are far more realistic.

Have a word with a company called LOCATE Supplies. I believe they have a depot not far from you. They can probably do you a length of suitable tube.

Visit your local metal factor. They may well have some suitable bits of tube (steel and ali) lying around at good prices.

Picked up a useful selection of various low carbon steels, some EN24 and a small stick of cast iron at one in the Black Country today, for a very fair price.
