Right chaps don't laugh, I changed jaws in two of my lathe chucks yesterday and I had a hell of a job getting them to line up when I swapped them over, I did put the right number jaw in the right spot, so whats the correct way or sequance.

No1 first, then No2 and finally No3.

Watch as the scroll comes round to the slot, back it up a fration, insert teh jaw and turn the key, make sure it engages in the scroll. Then same for the next one. Don't try putting them all in at onece and winding teh key round.

Ok assuming you are talking about a self centring chuck

Take first jaw…find slot it belongs in…rotate scroll so as to tighten jaws…watch for first err..thread to come into view…back up a bit leaving a gap at the thread start in the slot.

Insert jaw and tighten just enough to catch that jaw..move to next clockwise ( unless you scroll is opposite to this ) and repeat for other jaws

Have a look in the slot that the jaws slip into and there will be a number that will correspond with one on the jaw , Start with number 1 first then number two then number 3 last.

you may also be winding the scroll too far for each jaw so it is picking it up next rotation and therefore one turn out.

Assuming the jaws are in the right order, if any jaws stick out too far unwind the chuck pressing in the offending jaw or jaws until they 'click in' as the end of the scroll goes past.

If they still don't line up, then they are in the wrong order. Assuming jaw 1 is in the right place, swap 2 and 3 to get them all in the correct order).

Now draw/stick a picture of your chuck on the wall showing where each jaw fits OR stamp the chuck with numbers 1 to 3.

I have the drawing for my first 3-jaw, but the latest one came with the numbers stamped on.

You are keeping the jaw for each chuck separate, ie., jaws for chuck 1 with chuck 1, and jaws for chuck 2 with chuck 2. Ian S C

Probably not the case here, but watch out for Emco Unimat scroll chucks – if you reverse the jaws, the sequence is upset, so if you've marked the slideways 1, 2 & 3 for externally-gripping jaws, you need to change 2 & 3 when you fit them for gripping internally.

I have a chuck where the 1st tooth on No.1 jaw was very thin and and very close to the point of the jaw, I managed to break off the tooth by pushing the jaw too hard when inserting it into the chuck body. As a result, I spent several very entertaining minutes trying to get the jaws to line up. The sequence to fit the jaws is now 2-3-1.

Dave..it all seems like magic until you line the jaws up and see that for the first time eh?..just great when you do and know that you can get them back in order even if mixed up and unmarked. .also explains what is going on behind the scenes. .
