      I,m just starting to build a small power hack saw and the drawing's show I will need to do some silver soldering, so what do I need to be able to do this also i would like to solder some tips on some lathe tools also, is there a product that does both, I'm a plumber by trade so soldering is second nature as you can guess, a little advice on what to buy and where from would be very handy, this question is mainly for the UK chaps as they will hopefully point me in the right direction of the suppliers, but all advice is welcome, thanks for any reply's in advance as I don't get to the computer as often as I would like.

            Sound advice have a word with them, Cup Alloys are always at our Bristol exhibition and will happily give you all the expert information you need. I went to a local builders merchant quite some years ago purchased from them fire bricks, intended for going into a open log fire grate, or if you know or see one of the old storage heaters in a skip grab it the bricks inside will make a fantastic hearth.Come and speak to me will be on the club stand.

                Storage Heater bricks are a No..No..

                I have found that bricks from old storage heaters do not make good heaths as they are designed to absorb the heat, while we need the bricks to reflect the heat.

                  Hi Alan,

                  Dave is spot on and for the reasons he says.

                  DO NOT make a hearth from firebricks taken from storage heaters.

                  Use lightwright vermiculite bricks or kaolin wool.
