Hi Guys, I have just acquired a proper Myford cabinet for my S7 After reinstalling the lathe and using a test bar and DTI I adjusted the rear jacking screws to ensure parallel travel, happy days, until I tried to turn a short lenght of steel rod. I took very light cuts but still ended up with a taper. There is no play in the carriage, cross slide or compound slide, any ideas gratefully received.

How much taper over what distance on what diameter steel? What is a light cut 0.001" or 0.010"? There could be lots of reasons. Did it turn parallel before in similar circumstances before it was relocated? I take it tailstock support was not used?

          Paul.

The final adjustment is always with a light cut over a test turning piece. Go back and re adjust the base jacking screws on the raising blocks until you get it to turn with no taper.

Static set up with a ground test bar or precision level does not take into account cutting forces and movement due to wear etc etc. Your turning test is the real world moment of truth. The rest is all theory.
