Quick Change Tool Post for Sieg SC4 lathe (from Arc)

Hi

I've pretty much decided to upgrade from my Sieg SC3 lathe (by Arc) to a Sieg SC4. The only conern I have is with the QCTP. Arc sell one but it looks like a budget version and it is unclear to me how the toolholders lock in place.

Has anybody had any experience of the Arc QCTP and would you recommend it?

Alternatively, has anyone managed to source a better quality one and, if so, was there any machining needed to get it to fit correctly? My understanding is that the centre bolt needs to be M12 for the compound and M10 for the top fixing? I guess machining of the base of the QCTP might also be needed?

I appreciate any feedback received.

Andrew, which QCTP are you specifically looking at as ARC do Bolt type, Wedge Type and Piston type QTTPs that will all fit the SC4

Hi Andrew,

You have four options for the SC4, the Seig 'dickson-like' one, the 000, the 100 and 111.

The SEIG one works fine, but doesn't have the simple and quick lever mechanism.

The 100 and 111 need the fixing post modifying by putting a M12 thread on the bottom, the 000 needs new fixing post, M12 below than 10mm diameter.

The 000 is ideal for the mini-lathe or Myford 7-series, but looks a bit 'lost' on the SC4 (although it works fine).

I've done some trial with the 100/111 and they are excellently made but their ability to hold larger tools means they need another tweak to suit the SC4.

My guess is that most other larger toolposts will need a similar mod.

I'm currently using a 111, but working with Ketan on ideas to customise them to suit the SC4 better.

I suggest you give Ketan or Ian a call at Arc and discuss.

Hi JasonB: I understand that Arc sell a number of QCTP's but they only list one QCTP under the SC4 accessories. From what Neil has said, that explains why – as the others need some form of mod to work on the SC4.

Hi Neil: Many thanks for clarifying. I have the 000 on my SC3 and I can understand why it might look a little lost on the SC4. From the photos of the Sieg 'dickson like' one I am struggling to understand the process for swapping and fixing the tool holders. I will give Arc a call to discuss, as you suggest.

The cap head screw on the side pulls the dovetail shaped wedge in to retain the holder on the Sieg branded QCTP

A good idea, but the cutout doesn't look long enough to allow you to rotate the toolpost and you lose the t-slots.

There's a simpler solution!

Hi All

For now I have decided to go with the Sieg 'dixon-like' version supplied by Arc as this doesn't require any modification. It's not a massive investment, so I will give it a try. If other options come onto the market at a later date, I might consider changing. I ordered the toolpost yesterday, together with a Sieg SC4 and other bits and bobs. Delivery scheduled for tomorrow!

I must say that ArcEuroTrade are very good people to deal with, with excellent customer service.
