Sorry, if this has been asked before, but here goes… I am new into the hobby and am looking at my first project. Yes, I will get help from my local club. Not sure about what equipment I will have access to, but at least a school metal work room…

I have looked around and have a few criteria:

      1. Not freelance design
      2. Preferably LNWR, but LMS is fine (nothing green)
      3. 5” gauge
      4. Not too big a project, so tank not tender
      5. Plans, castings and other bits must be available

From what I have seen the MartinEvans Jinty fits the bill. However, there are a few negative comments I have read about his designs. Are there any other suitable candidates? Is this a reasonable project to start on?

      Thanks

      Dave

I know you said tank not tender, but how about the L&Y Aspinall class 27 by Don Young. I have just started one as a first build. It was absorbed into the LNWR. It will be driveable without having to remove bits of the loco cab which I do not like. Drawings and castings from Reeves, plus a lot of laser cut parts.
