My Triumph motorcycle big ends just ran on the ally of the con rod, top side anyway, I can't remember what the cap was. I've run out of bronze to make the coupling and con rod bushes for my 5"g loco, but I have loads of ally of uncertain origin. Has anyone ever tried this material? If so did it work? I don't want tor score the crankpins. Otherwise I have some carbon loaded ptfe and some Delrin, same question

2014 (old HE15) has good bearing qualitied and is often used in model IC engines for the conrods but if you don't know the perentage of your stock of aluminium its not worth risking it.

The oil and the working parts of a motorcycle engine get too hot to use plastic. And any way, a good heat transfer is needed, as the rod conducts heat down from the gudgeon pin and it has to go out through the crank etc.

              Tim,

I think the mention of the Triumph was 'by way of introduction' to the topic … Duncan's question relates to his loco.

                Hi Tim,

Use good old cast iron, far superior to bronze IMHO!
