Every now and then I see something, and just don't have words to describe.

The bolts coming out the chuck look like a medieval torture device.

I don't mean to be unkind, but this just looks flat out dangerous.

It's a box chuck, albeit larger than normal. Box chucks are standard accessories for clockmakers and instrument lathes.

Seller has set a reserve "to cover the cost of components" which suggests that – a. buying it as a source of parts won't be an economic proposition, and b. he won't find a buyer.

Not sure that's an induction motor as its rated at 2950 rpm. More likely to be a universal brushed motor and the speed controller is probably one of these

They don't use universal motors on grinders because of the risk of overspeed and I can imagine a cheap grinder using an induction motor quoting its speed as 2950, synchronous speed being 3000 on 50hz.

John, Syncronous speed 3000rpm 50hz, slip and losses =2850rpm(or so) for a 2pole motor.on load.Noel.

John, Noel – the motor is clearly marked 60Hz 240V, and if you look at the closeup of the speed controller, inside the red box it looks like the one I linked to.

But I must confess I haven't tried my controller ( used for an old electric drill) on an induction motor. I wouldn't expect it to work.

Ah, only looked at the photos on my phone, didn't see the motor plate. But a 240V 60Hz motor in the UK? Where did that come from? I just assumed that the 2950rpm was a bit of typical specmanship. I can imagine that the horrible induction motors used in cheap grinders would "speed control" down to 0 rpm run off one of those controllers, and up to max, just not very linear!!

A bench grinder for £12.50 sounds like a bargain.

Definitely one for the DIYer's Black Museum, to my mind.

Wonder how well the Headstock is aligned to the Bed? With difficulty?

Maybe a sow's ear waiting to be changed into something better, but will take a lot of work and time to become a silk purse or anything approaching it.

But it is a starting point for a budding machinist to gain experience
