Starting to look at inverters and wondered if there were any benefits (or indeed drawbacks) to using a higher rated inverter than strictly necessary – ie would a .75kW invertor be suitable for a .75kW (1Hp) motor or would a 1kW (or larger) be a better choice?

A 750W inverter should run a 750W motor or less with no problems. Often the actual motor current is one of the parameter settings so a smaller motor can be run at full performance and protected. Some more sophisticated inverters can run a self test to learn the motor that is connected and set relevant parameters. In general there is no point in overrating the inverter.

If the price difference between the two is small it may be worth going for the bigger inverter. You never know when you might want to upgrade the motor or the machine.
