Did anyone see last night's episode of Tolstoy's War and Peace?

In one scene/sequence, the main character was seen to be manually preparing a block of wood for later turning on a treadle lathe.

It was nice to see that having a lathe in the living room is nothing new then…

Yep saw that too; Jim Broadbent was using a spoke shave to remove the corners form a block of wood I assume that not having a tool post, only a rest, & turning by hand would give him some stick ( pardon the pun ) with taking the corners off, later on he was correctly using the treadle, I did notice that no shavings were coming off, (again potential for injury using sharp implement  ),,, or layed on the floor in the long shot, besides I'm sure elf 'n' safety would have had a hand in it… did they do a risk assessment… potential injury to an actor / untrained person… I wonder which museum that lathe came from?

Yes, but what was he making? About 200mm long and about 50mm diameter what could it be.

Oy! The moderators have enough of a broad education to know what you grubby-minded lot are on about.

As for "I did notice that no shavings were coming off", perhaps he wasn't good enough or they didn't think one bit of wood would be sufficient to last through W&P.
