I'm about to get rid of my Warco WS16 mill drill and go to something a little smaller and belt driven.

The spindle is now running seriously out of truth and I do not have the skill, knowledge or energy to dismantle it and put it right.

What do other MEW readers think is the best small machine?

      Many thanks for any advice.

      Richard.

          Hello Richard,

I'm assuming this isn't an issue with tramming the tilting head so it is vertical, but is a spindle issue.

Before leaping into dismantling or replacing, have you checked the bearing adjustment on the spindle? There are two circular nuts at the top of the spindle, one of which may have a grub screw in it that needs to be slacked off before it will turn. With the upper locknut slacked off, see if the lower one can be adjusted to remove any play in the spindle.

This should only take ten minutes to do.

          Neil

I don't think there is much about in the line of belt driven mill drills other than this one

I don't see why because it's some what easier to do on a miller.

The other one which is smaller and needs some care when buying is the Dore Westbury. Probably a lot heavier than what you have.

Many thanks everyone – especially Neil.

More info to you all is that I am 83, and the spindle is not just running out of truth but the whole spindle seems to have moved in the housing. I am well aware that this is just about impossible and I suspect that anyone with a bit of engineering knowledge could put it right.

However, as I also am thinking of changing my band-saw and have a never used lever feed for the ML7 tailstock (bought the day before my Tri-lever changed into a Super 7B which also has a rack-feed on tailstock and a Newton-Tesla inverter unit & DRO) I am going to offer them to a local tool dealer and buy a smaller mill from ArcEuro which is belt-driven with variable speed control. For all that I do I think that machine will be ideal.

I can no longer lug heavy engines around so I am enjoying making simple bits and pieces from the mag.

My S7B now cuts metric and BA threads and the DRO makes life simple.

Metric does not frighten me any more.

Once again – many thanks and best wishes to you all on this marvellous site.

              Richard.

                  HI all

Now for the laugh of the century.

I telephoned the Warco engineer this morning and he said that there was something in the spindle taper.
                  Had I scratched it?

So I did as he said and found a small piece of VPI paper from the new drill chuck arbor well up the taper.

Removed it and cleaned the spindle. chuck in and we are back in business again with a TIR of just under .002".

A small piece of "fag-paper" on the taper and we are down to almost nothing.

So the WS16 stays in use until after Christmas.

But many thanks everyone, and now you know what age and dementia can do!!!!!!

                  Regards

                  Richard.
