Can anyone give me an idea of how to screw cut with one of these lathes? Presently I am reassembling one which is in good condition but was dismantled when moving to lighten the loads. I do not understand how the feeds work and how to thread up to a shoulder is also a mystery. There is a bed stop if needed.

iFurthermore, whilst the countershaft drive unit is present it is extremely heavy and very large, so I am tempted to store it safely and use an inverter drive system instead. Has anybody done this to a Cromwell Mk2 ?

      Any guidance would be appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Andrew Clapp.

          Hello Andrew,

Welcome to the forum. One of THESE?

Looks like you have two feeds, one for screwcutting and one for general turning (fine feed). To screwcut you need to assemble a gear train at the back of the headstock to suit your leadscrew pitch.

At the bottom of the link above owners are invited to contact Tony whose website it is. he may beable to give you some machine specific advice.

          Neil

            Thank you Neil.

I have read the article you refer to and I do have a certain amount of experience with lathe work having restored a large number from about 1800 to post WW2. What is eluding me is the actual procedure to be used with this variety of lathe design. Does anyone know from personal experience? Thanks. Andrew.
