Anyone any ideas who might have made this little beasty. The bed looks like it has been made from a piece of small gauge rail track. All the other bits (headstock, carriage, etc.) look to be home made apart from the tailstock. I have a feeling it will keep me busy for a while.

What a sweet little lathe. ..it is about the scale of one of the projects I wished to build at school but was beyond the resorces available (ws time) ..shame…maybe I should make one now?….mmmm

"The bed looks like it has been made from a piece of small gauge rail track." or maybe a piece of RSJ ? The shape of the tailstock reminds me of a Smart & Brown maybe?? Certainly a homemade job. It will be interesting to see what you can make of (or maybe that should be WITH) it.

Hi Folks, thanks for the replies. Jason, yes it is 20" long, and a nice little project that has arrived just in time to keep me busy now that I have finished the clock. Norman, I think you are right, it no doubt is a length of RSJ and nicely dovetailed on the top surface. It's the tailstock that has me scratching my head. Not home made, because if that were the case why did the maker not cast a bed, and headstock at the same time ???? Did Smart & Brown make anything this small ? , and who would paint a chuck ?

Hi Derek

I think you are right – certainly not Smart & Brown – it's quite a while now since I saw one! It was the "chunkyness" that set me thinking this way but then I checked out Tony's site and refreshed my memory! If you've a few hours to while away you could amuse yourself by trawling through the pictures of lathes there and maybe come across the tailstock you have!

Hello Derek,

I can't help with the lathe, but you did ask who would paint a chuck. Taylor's chucks were painted for intial supply to Boxford anongst others.

A J Taylor of Birmingham made a lot of equipment, mainly heavy metal spinning lathes and their chucks were the rather strange pointy shaped ones that appear from time to time.
