Could Kwil clarify if the number 2 Castrol is suitable, as I'd planned on the replacing the grease on my boxford vm30 gearbox in the near future, I found this that gives the impression the double zero grade is the semi fluid?

The double zero is one grade thinner than zero. The number 2 Castrol is one grade thigher than number 1 etc.

The numbers are from the NLGI Consistency number

I meant is the number 2 semi liquid, it says 'general purpose bearing grease' in the information I found, which makes me think not, or is number 2 semi fluid, and the double zero near oil consistency?

Pete Per Boxfords' original maintenance instructions which I have:-

Gear Box – Is lubricated with B.P Energrease F600_EP at works and sealed, it should not require further lubrication.

Main Spindle Bearings -Are filled with SHELL Alvania RA at works and should not require attention.

When I wanted to overhaul my VM30, a contact at Castrol told me the Castrol Spherol  EPL2 was the correct grease. It is a dark grey/black material and pours, definately semi liquid.

        Kwil,

I'm really confused now, I checked to see if I had any of these greases, I ordered some about 6 months ago, by luck it was the Castrol spheerol 1 and 2, neither are fluid?

Don't know if this might help, it's the Castrol datasheet for Spheerol EPL1. They seem to be saying there are different NLGI grades within the Spheerol 1 range and you'd want NLGI 00 – or I may have mis-read it?

I'm seeing it says the EPL range, not EPL1 range?

Well, here's where it linked from – it's not the easiest site to try and find what you want, I must admit – can't find the "separate datasheet" for NLGI 00 they mention.

The data sheet you linked, it just says EPL range, nothing about EPL1 specifically?

Follow the link to the Wikipedia article. It has a 'real world' description of the NLGI consistency numbers Like so:-

Thank you Mark, that seems to confirm what Opie oils told me, and the two in my workshop I opened, neither 1 or 2 grade are fluid or semi fluid.
