Just back from a short trip to our local Emmaus to check for anything interesting bookwise. Bought a book titled "British Steam Engines" and another on the history of Sywell aerodrome.

I could not help admiring the lovely German made grandfather clock they had which chimes beautifully on the quarter, half and the hour and has moving moons.

So I bought that as well. moonclockmoon

Got home and realised we had forgotten the milk.

Started to tidy up and rearrange the workshop with the idea of making a bit more room…. not getting on very well. I had a pile of stuff that I decided I was going to take to the tip, pile got smaller!

Mark P, funny that, I have the same problem in my workshop, I find getting the wife to arbitrate over keep or throw certainly helps, trouble then is the following week Ineed an item which has been despatched to the tip. Good luck with your rearranging.

Hi Speedy Builder5, yes of course, info as follows:- Material as stated is 2mm L.A. sheet, purchased on eBay so spec unknown. Torch was simple, common butane/propane screw-on cylinder type. I made a hearth using broken building block, acquired free from local merchant. The brazing (or soldering, there is some discussion on this point) rods are special alloy for this process and are available from Techno-weld, or from Christopher Drew trading as Deats Ltd. His material is called HTS2000. Instructions for the process are simple and succinct. I just followed them implicitly and it worked extremely well. Both sources on eBay. Hope this helps,

Spent most of the day in and out of my garage tinkering but got fed up with the wind which kept shutting the up and over door, tried to find a piece of wood long enought, no joy so settled for a length of copper tube until I could see the pipe bending. Going in for my lunch I spotted the obvious, my wifes extendable clothes prop, I went to Argos to buy one and after cutting the hook off and making a top hat pressed into the tube I now have a door stop. As to time in the garage I've been busy cleaning up and sorting tools and started to make a table for my bandsaw, when in vertical mode.

                      Lammas 4 facet chuck

Having an increasingly large pile of drills that need sharpening, I decided to re-visit the four facet method. Many years ago I built the device to the design of Dave Lammas published in ME. I thought the basic design was sound but was never happy with the way the drill bits were held in a drill chuck and the attachment has been at the back of a drawer ever since.

Trawling the net, there are several attachments which incorporate ER type collets to hold the drill bit and this seems to be a much better arrangement. Hence, I bought an ER20 holder from ARC with the intention of building a completely new unit but today I happened to dig the Lammas jig out of the drawer and was pleasantly surprised to find that there's enough 'meat' in the casting to enlarge the bore to fit the ER20 collet holder.

Above is the result – hopefully I've saved myself a lot of work smiley

Inspired by YouTube videos from Ade's Workshop I modded my WM180

                                    1. Stripped down, cleaned and lubricated the WM180
                                    2. Drilled two 5mm holes to allow easy access to the top slide swivel
                                    3. Fitted a 65mm fan to the end of the motor
                                    4. Fitted NVR and wired extension block
                                    5. Modified splash plate to give 88mm more room behind the lathe

None of the above has improved my technical ability, but I felt good afterwards, and not surprisingly, so did the lathe

Added some extra power sockets to the stand my Myford Super 7 is fitted to. It has a VFD which was fed from a 16amp Blue plug fitted to side of LHS of cabinet. This meant had to unplug blue plug from wall to cut off power. So fitted an rotary isolator on LHS inner wall of the knee space, took feed from this to the VFD and to two double 13 amp sockets. One on RHS inner wall of knee-space. This for tool-post grinder and suds pump. Second one socket fitted by the side of the Blue socket on left hand side panel, this for the DRO and spare for a light. One of the main drivers for this was the fact that the lathe was running off a different phase than the ring main in the workshop and I did not want the possibility of 440v across the cabinet and lathe should something go awry. The rotary switch is so easy to get to it cab be used as Emergency stop. The VFD acts as a NVR switch.

As work is quite quiet at moment am able to get on with a few tidying jobs. Fitted shelf on wall by the mill to hold spanners, C wrenched and ER32 collet chuck, 3MT drill chuck etc to get them off the mill cabinet. Stops a lot of rattling and difficulty finding bits.

Now need to find way of storing Dixon QCTP toolholders.

                                          On sheds:- **LINK**

A weird shape, 2.7m wide at the back, 4.8m wide at the front and 8.4m deep, 3m tall at the eaves and with a 1.5 wide x 4.5 long x 1.1m deep 'cellar'. The cellar should have been 1.5m deep, but I discovered that the water table was about 300mm below the soil level embarrassed.

In other news. I've got a little silver soldering job to move some dowel and screw holes in the end plate castings of my milling machine. Due to the large amount of scraping that I had to do to restore flatness to the table and saddle ways and dovetails the X feed screw is about 1.6mm 1/16" away from the axis of the feed nut and power feed mechanism. This has caused the last 6-8" of travel in each direction to be rather tight. I finally decided to do something about it and concluded that the change needed was so large that just enlarging the holes and using larger dowels and sloppy bolts was not the right answer.

Current plan is to silver solder plugs into the existing holes, then bore them out in the right locations. Because it's thick cast iron, I wanted to get some Tenacity 6 flux rather than the Tenacity 5 that I've got. Trouble is that no one seems to sell the stuff retail and the lowest price I could find was about £50 for a 500g pot. Today a 1lb pot of Harris Stay-Silv Black flux arrived from our American colonies via Amazon, for the grand price of £14.50 including FedEx carriage.

It seems to be pretty much the same stuff as Tenacity 6:- Similar to Tenacity 5, long lasting and a similar temperature range, but with added boron to work with more refractory/hard to wet materials, such as tungsten carbides, stainless steel and cast iron.

I must say that I much prefer this type of video with no commentary, just a few on screen descriptive lines are all that is needed. I have given up on watching a number of YouTube videos because of the long and frankly very boring monologue commentaries liberally punctuated with lots of errs and umms.

Well done Tim for a very good idea.

Finished off the MT3 arbor for my Lenz LPA-1S Boring and Facing Head. A good friend of mine did the initial work for me on his Hardinge lathe. He turned the register and bores and cut the internal fine thread. Left me to make and fit the drive dog. All I have to do now is work out how to use it.
