A good afternoon in the shed. Cleaned the lathe, then packed two corners up so it runs true enough for me – 0.005mm (or naff all thou) in 90mm, made a cylinder square and four 25mm dia x 5mm thick washers for clamping on the mill purposes.

Plus we have learned how to score runs in the Test again, now all we have to do is learn how to take wickets, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Time for a shower, a beer or two and do another barbie.

Down in sunny Oxford we have just had 12,000 solar panels installed on the bodyshop roof, should generate about 3.4Mw on a sunny day,

Had a very frustrating day chasing down leaks in high pressure air systems, without success

Tomorrow, as they say, is another day. During which I will most likely do something totally different

Following on from Clive's Bees postings.

Next to my workshop is a large Lilac bush/tree. The weather today has been lovely so I have had both office and workshop doors open and my daft Spaniel has been in the garden. The lilac tree has had a load of Bees zooming around it. However, my daft***e Spaniel has decided that maybe Bees are edible (?).

All afternoon I have been hearing a "Schlomp" "Schlomp" as he has been trying to catch one in his mouth. He will only do it once I would think. But it is unlikely as he is no match for them (he can't fly though there are days he thinks he is a Helicopter!).

Poor Ted, not getting enough to eat obviously. My Springer had an affinity for spiders and snakes; that is until a small garter snake bit him on the nose while he was attempting to sniff it. Never any spiders in my shop when Sam was around. He would eat the spiders but only swing the snakes around by the tail. RIP

In the 70's I had a big Airedale who would accompany me every where even to the bees. They occasionally showed interest in him if he got too close and I sometimes saw him gallop off with his ear to ground trying to rub the bee off. When I put a swarm in its box in the back of the estate car he would crunch up in the corner and sit there showing the whites of his eyes. He too was bitten by an Adder in the mouth on some scrubland. The Vet said because it was March it was too early for Adders but the next day agreed and gave him steroid injections. He could not abide cats and gave chase when ever he saw one.

Our lab puppy will chew anything that doesn't move: walls, cast iron drain covers…

Last week i was making a low fence to keep the dogs off the lawn, left her for a moment and she spilt my nails.A few minutes later i saw she was chewing something and extracted a nail from her mouth.

When I was about 10 or 11, we were on a camping holiday and one of my brothers got wasps in his hair. My mum had him on the ground trying to get them out, but our dachshund took over and pulled them all out with his teeth. He was stung a lot, but got every one. He should have got a 'Dickin Medal'.

Just noticed the Cambridge Town and Country show is on at Parkers Piece. They usually have a few model traction engines in one corner. Anyone here an exhibitor?

I think that I had better add, 'He never caught one'. As such he was a very good retriever and game dog. He would work to hand signals and would often find game even after the other dogs had gone through the bush.

I had sheep in the orchard and a donkey. He would round up the sheep for me, and amazed farmer friends that he did not nip the sheep but worked like a sheep dog to hand and whistle.

Alas at 12 years he had a stomach tumour and he had to be put down. He was the third one I have had and the best.

Retrievers are bred to follow and fetch, but lack the 'kill' instinct. Our lab will sleep alongside the cats and even greets them by rubbing foreheads! The puppy is a bit more excitable, but still doesn't harm them. Gizmo even lets the pup go crazy nibbling her fur…

                                  Gentlemen,

My wife and I have a cat called cheeky but I believe he is a dog in a cat skin, he comes to call, if I walk up the street to visit friends he follows and waits outside for the return journey, he is always around when I'm outside with my hobby, recently my wife, who is and invalid, she has Ostio Arthritus in both knees and arthritus in her hands and fingers, went out to the back garden to find next doors Boxer running riot in our garden so she screamed at it to go back but he decided to jump up at her, if lyn falls over she cant get up unaided, out of know where cheeky appeared and proceeded to have a go at the dog to get it away from lyn, the dog took the hint and forced his way back through the hedge. Never thought a cat would do that.

                                        Martin P,

It is more common than you think, our three cats ganged up on a Dachshund when it came in the garden, it left pretty smartish yelping as the cats paw connected and some years (different cat) a go a bloke knocked on the door and asked if we could keep our cat under control, as it had attacked his German Shepard when it tried to chase the cat. I just laughed, has any one tried to control a cat may have tried but not a hope in hell.

There's a 'viral video' with CCTV from the Us where a dog pulls a toddler off his tricycle by the leg. The dog is shaking the poor kid when WHAM – out of nowhere a cat appears and hits the dog side on with all four legs, and proceeds to chase it away as mum comes to aid the kid.

Finished modifying the Saddle locking feature on the BH600G.

New thread and Album posted with details.

Heaven in being able to lock Saddle with no more them a 1/4 turn of handle.

The tailstock locking on my Sieg C6 was the same, spanner and took more than a 1/4 turn to nip it up. Turned out that the cast block that gripped the bed to lock the tailstock was an odd shape and by truing it up in the mill it would nip up in less than 1/4 turn – so then easy to make a nut with a little handle. So simple, but it makes a huge improvement in using the lathe.

I also have an Afghan. She is like the wind and the only thing I have ever seen outrun a squirrel – he was on the ground pinching the bird food. He won't be doing that again. We also have three cats, but harmony reigns.

Need to do something about the Bl**dy tailstock on my lathe. I did notice the newer models are fitted with a quick release lever. Need to copy it.

Many years ago I watched a young lady unleash a couple of Afghans on Pendine Sands. They were quickly out of sight but within five minutes were racing back again. She told me that of all the dogs she'd owned this pair were the easiest to exercise. I was not surprised – all she had to do was let them go and stand still till they came back again. Beautiful, graceful animals they were – and I'm not a doggy bloke!

Going back to cats, on the farm there are Feral cats so inbred that the kits are born blind. The adults hunt all over the farm and particularly in the woods. We often found small rabbits gutted out and at first did not realize it was feral cats. It seems they are a big problem and spread the cat disease which is like AIDS for cats. They started trapping but all of them were sick and put down. Another thing was that they did not seem to go for the rats! Then again there was rat poisen put down in safe boxes. As the cats disappeared then the Foxes started coming back in again. Nature has a way of filling all the gaps.
