Just recently, I have had to pay to pay an organisation. Do what I hear you say ???

The way it works, is you need to make a payment like re-newall of a contract , and opt to pay on-line as there is no address or other payment detail.

So there you are, ready to make the payment with your debit card in your greasy paws, tap the key to pay and the screen flips over to a payment service like “Worldline”  and off you go, but without warning, the payment amount has increased by about 1.1%. Dosen’t sound much, but when you are paying £380 odd smackers, it all adds up.

Now try and argue with the service provider that you should not bear the cost of the payment !!

      Good luck

      Bob

No idea what you are paying for Bob but I would dump them and look elsewhere for whatever service they are giving  !!!

          Also sounds dodgy 🙁

Probably a bit of drift here, but 1.1% surcharge is not uncommon:

Michael, as far as I/m aware it is not legal in the UK [or Europe I think] to make a surcharge when being paid by CC.  This legislation came in many years ago — however I wonder if Amex is special case?

Amex is very expensive to the vendor of goods or services, their charges are way above Visa MasterCard etc.

If this outfit is collecting moneys on behalf of a vendor and charges the vendor for the service and not the consumer [speedybuilder] that would be fine.

Further on Amex, just this morning I paid for my mother-in-law’s new kitchen (I’ll get the money back off her, and it adds to my Avios balance) – if using anything but Amex, we could have just paid a deposit and the balance later, but for Amex we had to pay in full up front, due to the charges to the vendor. Not an issue in this case, but worth bearing in mind.

The problem with finance companies charging over the odds is that the vendors may have to increase their sales prices throughout, just to compensate for the credit firm’s greed.

Here though, the trick was totally underhand. Any such surcharge should have been made clear at the outset, not tacked on afterwards.

At least we now know to avoid using AMEX if at all possible.

Perhaps I should chat with my neighbour who is a notaries secretary ??

I had a similar surprise when donating to a charity. I attended the funeral of a good friend, but forgot my chequebook. On the back of the ‘Order of Service’ was a QR card for donating to the preferred charity of the friend’s family. I scanned the QR code and specified the amount of my donation, but got a surprise when I went to the pay screen. The QR code turned out to be for a payment agency which wanted a somewhat substantial percentage of my donation ‘for their service’!!

You can imagine what I felt.
