turning tapers

I would like to turn a taper using the topslide on my lathe the taper is to fit my jto taper chuck could some one tell me how to work out the set over angle please

Hi Geoff,

when I turn short tapers I first clamp the chuck in the 4-jaw and center it, then put a Dial Test Indicator on the topslide and adjust until I can move the topslide without the indicator moving. Then mount the work and turn using the topslide. Don't finish turn, but test first by bluing.

There are a few solutions

My own solution on a hobby lathe was to use a dial indicator fixed to the cross slide and measure the taper over a fixed distance travelled by the leadscrew

Measure your taper this way, then set the topslide the same way with the dti fixed to the lathe bed

Fiddly, but worked well for MT1 stuff

Just one thing to add, make absolutely certain that the tip of the DTI is on centre hight, or use an "elephant foot" on the DTI.
