I am using a "Quick Step" Milling Unit as a router on my CNC. The unit is getting very hot and I wondered if anyone would know about lubrication in the gearbox. I have no manual of any kind.

If anyone has knowledge of these units, I would be most grateful for any advice.

As Hemmingway sell, or used to sell these units it may be an idea to contact them.

That nice chap Stub Mandrel lists four items in 1998, here: **LINK**

I haven't checked, but there may be something there about lubrication.

…. but no longer available. Pity – looks like a useful tool.

(Though interestingly Hemingway now have a complete Quorn kit).

My QSM gearbox and motor do heat up under prolonged use but not so much as to cause me concern. I only ever use the machine in horizontal mode and I wonder whether you are running yours with the spindle vertical which might well make a difference.

I think the motor is continuous rated but perhaps not for the extended running that CNC may involve.

I have the paperwork that came with it and will check to see if anything is said about overheating.

                  Hi Rob,

I attach a copy of the lubrication advice for the Quick Step Mill. I only use mine in the horizontal mode, so cannot comment on vertical use. My motor does become a little warm with extended use. The gearbox runs cool, but I only run mine at slower speeds for milling/drilling work held in the chuck of the lathe. Could be worth ringing Kirk at Hemmingway. I believe that he has used a QSM extensively.

I find the QSM an invaluable addition to my lathe. I purchased my unit new but found that I needed to top up the oil.

                  Kind regards Ray Griffinqs mill.jpg

I must check my oil level!

I made a small mod to the belt cover on my unit which allows me to apply a gentle push to the machine when needed (I have to take care not to attempt to lift the machine by the new handle):

Having recently inherited a quick step mill. Where actually is the oil level /plug situated?
