Hi all, I have aquired a good quantity of morse taper and straight shank reamers and drills over the last few years and currently sore them in bisley drawers. But I don't like how they clank around, so I was looking for some inspiration on how best to store them.

      Thanks

Have a look at Plastazote foam

It doesn’t absorb moisture and it’s easily cut and glued.

You can get drawer liners for Bisley from ** Ryman's ** There are also similar corrugated type liners about from various suppliers. You could even use a bit of the small profile corrugated roofing plastic cut to fit.

What about the telescopic tubes you often get new drill bits packaged in? They are available on ebay etc.

I use 4mm ply and bits of hardwood strip just glued in place with PVA on a baseboard:

I give the wood a spray with 3 in 1 oil before use. Of course, you could always use 3D printed separators…

I would do the same as Rod above and if the draws are a little deep make a lift out tray to sit on top

Sounds like a job for the 3D printer.

Id love a 3d printer if I had the space. I think I'll go with Rod and also the lift out tray with ply. Thanks for all the great responses

Milk bottles, plastic kind. The handle provides a bit of tube for this sort of thing. Then the bottom inch or two is a small parts holder, several fit in a drawer, then the body where it is flat can be cut to a sheet then rolled up and set in this shapw with a heat gun gently applied. This gives variable diameter springy tube for protection jobs.

Try EVA foam, I've used it a lot for that purpose, it's incredibly tough, and wipes clean of oil.

Tip: always store cutting tools oriented nose to tail so the sharp bits have less chance of knocking together.

I just superglued cheap 1" aluminium angle to the tray of the draw. In many cases this did not really work but the loose angle kept the tools separated. I have now epoxy glued the angle to thin (1,6mm think) plywood.

Looking at some of the photographs I am amazed to see cutters without their protective cases. A cutter is sold in case to keep it away from the nasties in the outside world. I keep the case and put the cutter away oiled in the cabinet so I know where it is. I know some dealers at shows sell uncased cutters in trays but I would not buy from them.

I've read about using expanding foam and old T-shirts to make fitted drawer liners, but I can't find the reference at the moment.

I use a Bisley cabinet in my shed. I lined the drawers with corrugated cardboard, corrugations upwards. That stops a great deal of the rattling.

I drilled a block of thick MDF to keep ER32 collets in place.

I made a couple of trays for dies by drilling through one sheet of plywood to make circles and screwed it to a second sheet.

I expect many of us acquire drills, reamers and other cutting tools like taps that we use very infrequently. When purchased, cutting tools are often hot dipped in a oily soft plastic, Zoro supply blocks of this and I use a small cheap deep fat fryer to melt this and dip tools, the dipped sleeve can often be slipped off and reused but if damaged can be remelted in the pot. As these dipped tools are reasonably well protected they can be stored in contact with each other with no harm. This is not ideal for everyday storage but a mixture of individual compartments and a miscellaneous drawer with dipped tools protected from knocks and corrosion is a possible solution.

I have got a small electrically heated pot (intended for Woodturners to dip cut ends of timber in wax) which I bought on a whim but have never used.
