Turn the bar so the part to be knurled is a slightly larger dia or knurl all of it then turn down where you don't want the knurl

Thanks Neil. Do you mean put a little angle on the compound slide?

Cheers Jason. I actually did wonder that. I still prefer the look/quality of your hand turned knurls that you did with indexing. I'm going to try some coarse wheels and see if the look any better, if not I might have to try your route

Found the pic I was looking for, problem with making so many engines is you forget which one has what bitsblush

Your knurl is not deep enough at the moment to give a sharp edge to the crests, brass is not the easiest, have a practice on a bit of aluminium which is more ductile so is more easily pushed into shape by the wheels. One below was a scissor job

Yeah they look better Jason. Were they using medium wheels or coarse?

I'm having trouble getting any deeper with the fine wheels, on the cowells that is. Belts start to spin and I feel like I am at the limit.

Could try putting cutter on centre line rather than 1/3 dia out mentioned above creating same effect as the supposed big no no of this ilk.

With that in mind you are also having to over come lateral force generated rather than just rotational torque.

Centre up and keep closing the scissor and leave it running until desirable finish. Will work any where along round bar not just the start.

I would call the ones that I used in the above photo Fine, there is nothing written on them. Work is 14mm dia

If you set the tool a Rod describes by clamping it onto the work, retracting and tightening the clamp screw before feeding into the slowly rotating work you may find it best to do this a few times slightly turning the screw each time to make the knurl deeper. This will strain the machine less that trying to do it all in one go.

Thanks Jason, Yes they look similar to mine. I am going to try on some narrower stock and see if that improves also since I have been trying on 20mm which is just beyond the maximum limit (which is stated as 19mm for this design If I recall correctly) I had to reverse the clamping screw to squeeze it so I could get a decent bite on the threads.

No, just the toolholder, so the knurl only cuts on a corner, much more pressure for the same force.
