            Hi Guys,

This thread has reminded me of my youth and those little Put-Put boats, and the smell of the solid tablets that fuelled it. Does any one know what those little round tablets that
fuelled it were? I seem to recall it was known as “solid” Meths, but I am sure It didn’t smell like modern Hexamine.  Funny how smells can bring back memories and vice versa.
Who remembers the Boys and Girls exhibitions at Olympia?

              Hi.

Have you looked at the Mamod site?
They sell solid fuel tablets, I’m not sure what they are actually made of, but it might be worth looking into.

As they power Mamod models I guess there should be lots of heat!

                 HI
I remember going to one of them, I cant remember how old I was but one thing that springs to mind is Sturmy Archer were demonstrating their new hub dynamo, they had it set up in a glass tank fullof water, to show how it would work in the rain I suppose.

the other thing was I queued for ages to have a go on an army artillery gun and when it was my turn the damn batteries were flat.

                    Hi everybody:
The solid “meths substitute” was called Meta Fuel. I think it was eventually withdrawn from sale because it was poisonous if mistaken for a sweet and swallowed. If you “Google” for it, you will find some details.

Hi to all who responded to my question,

I might have known some ninny would ban the little round pellets, it was about the time when parents started to not teach their kids properly.
Don’t people realize that genetically they only have two purposes in life, One/ to give birth to next generation. and Two/ to teach their offspring how to survive in a hostile environment, till they can they can fulfil the first pupose.
Humans have the longest period of pre-puberty of any animal, this has come about as a need to teach the young all they need to know to fulfil purpose One, successfully.
The above is not a rant, just a statement of fact. Everything else in life is a bonus.
Mind you, once purpose One and Two have been  met, is the time to start enjoying yourself. Till you have to start baby sitting again, best to move far enough away to make this a problem. Only kidding!
That’s all for now, Folks. Back to the Asylum. Bye.

Gelert fuel tablets, from Black’s camping shops.
I use them in my vertical boiler.

Just a thought, the common fire lighter “Zip” or similar may do the job they can be cut with a craft knife to the size required, they seem to be made from a white waxy substance, a packet would go a long way on a small boiler/hot air engine.

I haven’t used these things for ages, but I seem to recall that they burn with a rather sooty, yellow flame and a strong smell of paraffin. Just trying to be helpful, but at least an experiment would be cheap enough!

Sounds like a good source of lampblack. A spirit based fuel would be better, is there some thing for the barbecue,I would think it would be some thing less smelly. Don’t know if you have barbeque shops in UK,but there must be some outfit that sells that sort of thing. They won’t be doing a roaring trade at the moment!!Ian S C

I use lots of firelighters, There are many different types, from sawdust soaked in old wax to very clean burning dry white blocks sim. to camping fuel. Would suggest ones advertised as suitable for barbies would be best, but can’t tell until yuove bought them. Brands seem to change the formula also.

Fire lighters are basically solidified parrafin wax and only any good for starting fires in such things as stolen cars or domestic solid fuel heating.
