It is said to be very important for the Kopp Variator on these lathes to be lubricated with the correct oil and the recommended one is Shell Morlina S2 BL 10 (which fortunately can also be used for the headstock). I am struggling to find a supplier of small amounts of 1litre – 5 litres, the smallest so far being 20 litres at a price of about £80 which is too much quantity of both oil and money. Can anyone steer me in the right direction for a distributor of small amounts, either online or near Oxfordshire? Many thanks, Adam

No, sussex , put it in a milk bottle , royal mail will never know what it is. wink

I did ring kopp years ago ,they sold small amounts  for about £20 was it?

Like you say it is essential to use that oil .

Out of sheer curiousity, I had a look for equivalents … only to find this emphatic warning: **LINK**

Worth trying Caldo, parent company of Hallett Oils. They may be able to do less than the 20l bucket which seems to be the minimum online. No idea when the variator oil was last changed on my Chippie. I am going with if it ain't broke don't fix it. I am an Oxfordshire Shipmaster owner.

I was looking for oil for my Mill, and contacted a farm tractor dealer. The dealer only sold what I needed in larger quantities, but phoned a couple of their customers in my area to see if they could help. That worked, an I purchased the small quantity of hydraulic fluid I needed.

Perhaps a supplier could direct you to a machine shop which uses the product you need and you could approach them about the small quantity you need; it might be worth a try ?

I bit the bullet and bought 20 litres of the stuff from Smith and Allan in the summer, I think just over £80 delivered. The same oil is used in the headstock so i did an oil change on that as well. Variator is very very smooth and works well so obviously this oil is the business.

From the research I did at the time there were no alternatives.

There is one supplier of small amounts which is Allspeed themselves but the prices are exorbitant (£28.20 for 1 litre delivered, £65 for 5 litres delivered). I am thinking that since it scores 10.0 on the ASTM D445 viscosity scale at 40 deg C which is less than Mobil Nuto H32 (scores 32.0) then I can use it as an upgrade for the beloved Myford as it will have no problem wicking up to the spindle and will offer superior lubrication than the Nuto "hydraulic" stuff which itself sells on fleabay for about £18 per litre. Any thoughts on that, Myford owners?

                          .

                          Seems eminently logical, Adam

Perhaps a survey of what devices [apart from the Kopp Variator] it is "essential" for, would give use some better understanding of its unique character.

The 'Technical Data Sheet' certainly looks promising, but; in view of the Kopp warning note [linked earlier], I had to smile when I read this:

"These characteristics are typical of current production. Whilst future production will conform to Shell's specification, variations in these characteristics may occur."

Quite so Michael! I was thinking that one wants some degree of viscosity so it actually remains on the surfaces needing lubrication (!) but then since the Myford is a total loss lubrication system, the downside would be that I might merely end up going through a bit more quantity of the Shell Morlina S2 BL 10 than I would the Mobil Nuto H32 – I suspect the quantities increase will not result in an empty 20 litre drum in my lifetime!

I take it not everything behaves in a "Newtonian" manner? Which this oil happens to not be and therefore trumps all competition? face 22 Even if they can prove the same? Sounds a little fishy to me.

For Myford owner who need Esso Nuto 44, I suggest you take a clean, empty milk carton to your agricultural dealers, ship chandlers or earth moving plant operators premise, its hydraulic fluid, we buy it local for about £2 a can. John
