This is there code number for the item (EKIFX-35004B) its sold by MSC I don't' know how to get the link on the screen for it, I wanted to know if any one has one of these or knows anything about it, been thinking of ordering one but I know nothing about it and some advice would be good.

        Regards Alan.

You can buy a lot of milling cutters for the price of that!

Alternatively have a look at Harold Hall's book, "Tool and Cutter Sharpening". There he describes how to make one almost identical to the one at MSC. I made one and it works very well.

With the correct added tool holding equipment, the right wheel setup and a fair bit of posh fettling this might give you the basic facility of grinding the side cutting edges and clearance angles on end mills and slot drills. You would need additional tooling to give you the required tilted angle to gash in and sharpen the ends.
I think I would save my pennies and buy a second hand cutter grinder that will do both.

For what it's worth (not much) the best cutter grinder I ever used for small milling cutters was a small floor mounted Pratt & Whitney with its rubber collets – I know that won't help you a lot but I thought I'd chuck it in anyway.
A lot on here advocate using carbide cutters and simply replacing when blunt. Good advice which would be even better if you can find a supplier of cheap cutters.
              Good luck!
              Rik

As Russell says by the time you add in a decent wheel or two, means to angle the holder, etc you can buy a lot of cutters.

I tend to just buy new, either the FC-3 ones in smaller sizes when they are on special or for larger sizes the imported ones from the likes of Richon will do for most jobs at about £1.50 for a 1/2" cutter it does not work out too pricy.

I have no connection with Cromwell but their sale brochures always have bargains with milling cutters.

The latest, No. 83. for Aug. is an eyeopener with some cutter prices you could not refuse.

Cost wise anything much smaller than 10mm or 3/8" is not worth getting done professionally and only good quality cutters over that.

There is a guy who offers tip only sharpening on Homeworkshop site, think its about £1.00 a cutter

                        Alan,

Only saw this late tonight, I bought one of these and sent it back, would be OK if you want to use it as set of castings and rework the tool. The main spindle is carried on screws with a single ball bearing set in the end which does not revolve and consequently they wear VERY quickly. The basic concept is good but the quality leaves a great deal to be desired.

Just my opinion and others may think otherwise.

                                Hi Alan,

My first post so hello to all I've been observing for quite a while some very interesting stuff on here for a newby.

I have already communicated with Andrew Johnston via another forum I'm also building a 4 inch Burrell.

Alan if you were still interesterd in the fixture there is a new one on fleabay, under tool cutter grinder, and a video of a similar device being used on http://www.bedroom-workshop.com Hope this has been some help.

                                        Hi Andrew.

Making good progress with the Burrell. All gears faced bored ready for gear cutting. Front hubs and axle machined. Working on the front end ,smoke box, perch bracket , fork nearly done bit of milling required, Have also turned the smoke box door and name rings. need to do the hinge next. As you can see I've been doing the straight forward stuff first. I look forward to your threads on model engineering and glean a lot of info, and thanks to the rest of you forum contributers for the support and insight you give.

I expect I'll be in touch soon, keep the setups coming.

                                        Regards Arnold.

G'day, best thing I ever made was Harold's adjustable table from the book. If I can do it anybody can. Make one!
