Shaper Motor Direction

Hi.

Can someone tell me which direction the motor turns on the 10M. And does it make any difference which way it turns.

Am having to fit a new single phase one on a machine that i recently got , with a shot motor on.

The rotation on the pulley/clutch drum is clockwise as you look directly onto it. The direction is important as the thrust direction on the ram is affected.

Without braving a dirty night outside to check, I think you will find a direction arrow cast into the rim of the drum

The crankpin should be at the top when the ram is coming forward over the table. This gives the slow forward on the cutting stroke and quick return.

This is critical with a shaper, the forward power stroke MUST be when the crankpin is at the top

There's too much stress if its the wrong way round

The easy way to tell is the power stroke is the slow stroke movement and the return stroke is the fast stroke movement

It works that way because of the geometrics of the drive system

Thanks for the reply s , and to Brian yes i can see now that there is a direction arrow on the drum..

Once i get the motor on and clean it up a bit i will have to get my head around setting it up . After reading and watching You Tube , i still am not quite sure on setting the ram in connection with the crank. ??

Hello Chubbs,

If the shaper is intact and only the motor a failure then there should be no need to worry over the way the ram is connected to the crank etc, that is all internal and not affected at all by a dead motor.

What I would recommend though when you have your new motor attached is to pull the drive belting over by hand to check out everything for free movement BEFORE you apply power
