      Just a bit more :

They were never common but some high speed shapers were made for special purposes .

Makes me think about whether better tooling would allow more conventional shapers to run usefully just a little faster .

Bit of a problem with unbalanced loads but that could be solved I’m sure .

Micro sized shaping machines – as being considered by Micahel Gilligan – need not follow the conventional thinking on design at all .

Loads would be so low that really a fixed tool with the work moving relative to it on conventional XYZ slides with full positional control via CNC ( and with or without additional axes )would do everything needed .

No need for a high power drive to the tool/work interaction – the traverse motors would be more than adequate .

When you think about it in these micro sizes you just fit a fixed tool to a conventional CNC milling machine for lighter work .

        Hi,

I too have an Elliot 10m. Since all the tooling (and crank handles for that matter) were lost in shipping. I purchased these 2 books:

The shaping machine — Ian Bradley, MAP technical publishing.

Lathe and shaping machine tools – duplex – TEE publishing

I also joined the yahoo shaper group. There are some interesting downloads in the files section. Regarding the insert tooling; I am thinking the Button Type Profile Tools SRDCN (that amongst others greenwood tools sell, no connection) might be worth a try for getting uner the skin of castings. Has anyone tried any insert tooling?

          Hi Mike,

I went self employed… but most of the time its been DIY keeping me out of the workshop and off the computer!

              Hi,

I have used the button type inserts on my Boxford shaper, and was very pleased with the finish it gave on cast iron and steel. Used it for a finish cut rather than getting under any 'skin'.
