      £117 and rising!

You could always bid on a Ajax Horizontal milling machine, only a bit rusty but at 0.99p it's a snip.

I would, but its at Dorking….a bit too far for me….Looks like an AJ7 or 8 I had one before, had been abused by previous owner(s). I converted it to 3 phase with a vfd and sold it on, wish I had kept it now…sad

Rust like that is in the tolerances

It's in the headstock bearings, the cross slide surfaces the leadscrew the tailstock barrel

It's a dead parrot, even in Norway

Wouldn't have thought white-metal would go rusty (?)

Given the prices that are asked for used ML7/S7 parts, I wonder what the non-rusted (alloy, bearings etc) parts would go for.

The inner part of the headstock casting which contacts the spindle bearings will be shot, you can probably waggle the bearings about after a few taps with a lead mallet

As I say, a dead parrot

Dump it into an oildrum full of vinegar for a few days…

I got my Drummond M series with busted backgear, a spare bed and a load of bits for 125 bananas 10 years ago…

This must be inflation adjusted Brexit prices we're seeing now

Some naughty individual will clean up the bits, paint them and pass 'em on as pre-loved spares

This could be the ideal boat anchor for my fishing boat. I need weight up forrard once the 50hp pushes it up to 40 knots the bow rises.

Well it went up to £137 and still didn't meet the reserve price.

I never thought we'd get over 3 pages of amusement out of it.

Not modelling, but mechanical engineering of the Victorian age. I recently watched only half a circular sock machine sell on epay. If complete it was worth perhaps a grand or more, but with a lot of irreplaceable parts missing it was worth less than half that. Basically bought as spares or for completion from parts of another broken/worn out/partly rusted away machine.

Bidding went to £370 towards the end of the auction, which was still too "hot" for me. In the last few seconds two people had placed bids for nearly, or over, £1300, so the highest bidder got it "dropped on their toes" for about £1290. We, of course, have no idea if the bidder suddenly got wise to their mistake and defaulted (but it has not been relisted)….

Well, we could discuss the difference in the rates of rust accumulation between Boxford and Myford lathes, surely that would keep us going for a week or twowink

Must be about six or eight years ago I came across a quite early Myford lathe in the basement of a second hand shop in North Wales. I was browsing for other things entirely with a relative and certainly didn't expect to see a lathe amongst furniture and crockery etc.

Close to zero rust, not tarted up with a slap of paint, identifed later from a few photos I took as possibly an ML4 from the early 1940's, I think it was priced at around 100 quid with a selection of tooling, chucks, faceplate etc Certainly a far more viable machine tool than the one referred to in this thread.
