QCTP are becoming very popular but when fitted to a lathe the tool holder hangs over the end of the compound with no support only its clamp to the post. The fitted 4 Way turret it replaces sits within the compound slide giving full support to the tool.

Are people on the forum who have QCTP finding any problems with accuracy of work.

Used correctly a QCTP is a boon to anyone frequently changing tools, accuracy and cutting capability need not suffer –

I use a Dickson type, and no I don't have problems with rigidity, and any accuracy problems are generally due to operator error, usually not setting tool datum correctly! Systems such as the Dickson didn't get developed to make life easier for model engineers but to meet an industrial need for quickly changing tools and being able to replace them in a known configuration.

Yes, of course the increased overhang must inevitably result in reduced rigidity. Any slack in the top slide gibs will make it less rigid as the cutting forces will tend to lift the furthest dovetail. Whether it affects accuracy or finish must depend on your set-up and how hard you push things. I find the QCTP gives good accuracy and repeatability for normal turning but for big parting jobs I change to the four-way.

Like Russel I use the QCTP for normal turning, but use a rear toolpost when parting off. I wouldn't be without my QCTP and some toolholders.

Me too. wedge one at front and piston one at the back.
