Many years ago I was given a scraper made from an old Eclipse power hacksaw blade. It was very useful and kept a good edge but I’ve sadly mislaid it. It’s a long shot I know but do any of you know of a possible source for old, used HSS power saw blades? They need to be in the 1 1/2” to 2” wide range so quite large. I’ve actually got several uses in mind if they’re not too expensive.

I haven't seen any of that type either; make good scrapers. I've looked for some for myself at boot sales with little success but I'll bet there'll be some on eBay at silly prices.

Woodworker's plane blades make quite a good alternative when I need a wider scraper.

My smaller power hacksaw is a Manchester Rapidor Junior, which only takes 9" blades, so i have a few spare ends that I use left over from shortening longer blades.
The hardest bit is drilling the new holes in the HSS blades

Presumably the blade would need to be all hard ie not bi-metallic.

Depends what you call silly – searching for "power hacksaw blade" gets quite a lot of options from £9-£10 posted. Not too bad a price for a piece of HSS 18-21" long x 0.075" thick delivered ?

Possible source of hacksaw blades is from a Steam Fair, seen a few in the junk bins

I made a very useful machete out of a powered hacksaw blade years ago, use it to cut down troublesome shrubs, think it was an Eclipse blade about 16 inches long.

I have one which is brand new from a steam fair good place for odd bits like this. Still have not made what I intended with it yet but will get around to it one daylaugh

I made a most useful narrow parting off chisel for woodturning from a broken one of these blades.

I ground off the teeth just to the bottom of the gullet to keep the hardened edge. I ground the back to make a c. 40 degree point. I then relieved the two sides of the blade from just behind the cutting edge. Used with the teeth side down. It is very easy to sharpen and never binds in the cut. A great tool if turning exotics.

My dad used to grind old files down. He made some very good wood chisels with them. He also sharpened some at a narrower angle & used them as scrapers.
