I can do it but I'm quite a bit north of you, having said that I've done loads of stuff for bikers via drawings / emails photo's etc, so it can be done but it can also take more time due to communications delays, CNC is really aimed at production, however most of the stuff I make are one off's, I work from home so my overheads are small and my time is my own, I perhaps should point out I'm not commercial as a rule I only do my own and mates stuff, but if your stuck and time is not your main priority Ill have a look.

Gosh, I hadn't realised how lucky I have been. I recently completed the building of a vertical milling machine from castings that I made myself. There were two jobs that I could not do so I went to a local company, Adams Engineering, Skegness. They milled a flat surface on an aluminium casting 24" x 3" and threaded the end of a 16mm splined shaft. Their work was spot on and not expensive.

There are people out there that can do jobs at realistic prices, you just have to search for them.

One of the problems with subbing out the work is you will very soon have spent a lot more on the model than it is really worth if you are not careful. Most of us in our own workshops would not be able to produce reversing link, ecc rods etc in less than a day so if I were charging my daily rate that would be over £325 with the VAT and thats without any materials or tooling costs. Don't forget that the part that took 20mins to make may need a 30min round trip to the postoffice to be weighed and posted

Or a whole traction engine would take over 1000hrs work, even at minimum wage it won't be worth that for a 2" let alone the 5 to 6 times that you will be paying for skilled work.

I do take on the odd commission but its whole engines where I can make one part to fit another, no good saying you want a bush with a 1/2" hole and 3/4" OD if your shaft is a bit of BMS thats 0.003" undersize and the gears are a thou or two over the 3/4" bore if you want to press in the bush. manual or CNC will make no difference without the mating part.

Has Graham actually got your castings? if so I would go and collect. More likely they are not cast.

Im going to by a mini mill and do what i can myself, he has my money and my parts but i don't drive so i have to just ring and email.

which hes ignoring both..i'm seriously angry and i'm not the type of person to be messed around with.

Nice engine and so are the little diesels and glows but as the thread is about getting parts machined I think most people took little notice as postage from the UK to Oz and back would not be practical. If you want to discuss the V12 then may be better to start a thread in teh IC engines section.

You are quite right it might not be practical Jason, but I can guarantee it will be four times the cost of the part as well. Postage in Australia is a real dear do.

I have learned over the years that it is far better to have the item in front of you that needs the part rather than someone send a drawing. There are only a few people who send me drawings that are any good. The rest are "variable". Mostly it is all hand fettling to make vintage stuff fit together properly.

Derek. I see you plan to purchase a mini mill soon. I bought a proxxon now mf70 for some small bits I wanted to make (I also have a "normal" mill), but got a CNC conversion kit as well. I wouldn't be without it now. All those tricky shapes like expansion links, connecting rods etc are so easy now. Just a thought.

I don't think I'm going to see my money or my castings I've brought, so don't want to fork out for a mill yet.

When I worked in cnc turning shop..
Minimum costs for and job was about 180 quid… unless done completely as favour..
These costs were. .
Quote processing
Quality requirements assessment
Validation of customer credit
Sourcing minimum quality of material…
Special tooling
Special gauging
Last but not least cycle time…times number of parts

We oftern offered these customers..
180 quid for 1 or
180 quid for however many we could make out of 10 foot of bar. ..
Seriously it cost us as much to quote for 1 off as to quote for 14k parts..
Best approach was catch boss in right mood at get permission to get a machinist to make it for tea money….
