A local electronics workshop was looking to clear out a couple of machine tools before Christmas, fortunately the manager sold them to me at a reasonable price – knowing they'd be going to a good home – before a trader swept in. Hence I had little time to do any detailed research on the model/features etc.

I know round head Colchesters in good knick, are well worth hanging on to. No paperwork came with it.

Therefore please can someone confirm whether this is the Master Mk1?

Secondly, is this style of collet the correct fit for this model since the seller and I aren't sure!!

            Looks like a mk.1.

            See here

Thanks Brian. I did skim those webpages. But I found it hard to discriminate between the Master Mk1 and Student Mk1 – is it simply a longer bed?

A student should be 6” CH a master should be 6.5” CH

Having said that apparently colchester made most students 6.5” without changing the badge which states 6”

Masters were always 40 “ Between centres rather than 24 for the student

Its also a mk1 as it has the sliding handle for cross and longtidunal feed

Mk 1.5 ‘s have a lifting knob and a separate knob to cross and long

Mk 2 would be square head

That collet set and chuck is good for that lathe

Its a bernerd multisize set on a LO taper fitting

I couldn't see the gearbox lever on the mk.2.

I think you have the Master.

                      Regards Nick.

I also thought Students had the apron hand wheel on the left and the Masters on the right?

My Student was 24" between Centres and my Master 36". 6 and 6.5" centre heights.

The Triumph was always the Biggie.

Hand wheels depend on whether a gap bed or not same on both models

Thanks all for the input. I agree it has to be the Mk1 Master.

That would explain my straight bed Student having a L/H apron hand wheel and my gap bed Master having a R/H apron hand wheel….

Always preferred the L/H handwheel, seemed in the "proper" place…

Guys, I've just posted a "Help Me Identify" request. It all sounds similar to this but without the cabinet base. Perhaps someone could assist, thanks.
