I worked in the pattern makers shop during my apprenticeship for Vickers Armstrongs Aircraft back in the ’60s – never saw one of those,  plenty of contraction rules for different metals though.

That’s a neat bit of kit ! Though ONLY for wood, never seen one before. I would expect it to be rather expensive ? Noel.

Looks to me as if it is meant for the Maintainance Workshop of an Engineering manufacturer.

Cant see it ever being of use in any of the Pattern shops I have worked in ,or visited.

Typical, over engineered, “catch all” tool that 90% of it will not get used more than a few times. if ever.

                  Keith.

They have been a popular woodworkers vice here for a number of years particularly for those who also do a bit of carving or make more organically shaped furniture. Gets the work and the grain orientation where you want it so the chisel, spoke shave, etc can be used without too many contortions.

Probably not been seen by the UK members in a pattern shop as they are an American item. Bit like Pony clamps which were not seen here until 30 or so years ago as everyone just used sash clamps.

Axminster sold them for a number of years as well as some of the other specialist woodworking tool suppliers.

Spot the vice in this US pattern shop making patterns for full size locos, goor range of flywheel castings too.

I have one of those multi angled wood carvers vices under the bench. It does as you say, orientates the grain whre you need it to be. It is nothing like those  massive chunks of cast iron in the Video.

                      Keith.

Things were a bit slow logging in tonight,
