Decided to buy a rotary table with tailsock and plates after a few cans of beer the other week which arrived today, bit of a impulse buy as I don't think I will do it justice .

I looked on you tube and the owner completely stripped it down to clean it up and reassembled with grease. My question is this nesscerray or will a clean up to get rid of surface grease be good enough .

Lubrication depends on make and model, I would think. Have you looked for any oil nipples? That may give a clue.

When I bought my HV6, many years ago, I just cleaned off the external grease and have used it ever since, with out any problems.

My motto tends to be "if it broke, don't fix it,"

Unless it needs fixing in some way, and you are familiar with exactly how it is assembled and adjusted, it is probably better left alone..

Stripping needlessly could means that some part gets lost or damaged or a factory set adjustment cannot be repeated with the same accuracy.

And, YES, I have spent time crawling around looking for some part that I have not seen before, in the hope that I can work out how to put it all back together!

Both my rotary table and a new chuck i bought sounded like they had been oiled with sand, after a strip down, clean and a bit of deburring, fresh oiling they work fine so I would recomend doing it for the time it takes. This is mainly for indian and chinese manufactured parts. I don't think you would find grit or un deburred edges in a Bison chuck but definately in a chinese one, hence the differences in price.

All three of mine just got cleaned externally of protective muck and have worked well since.

Is it the Soba 5 inch that you asked me about that you have. If so I just cleaned the outside of mine and haven't delved inside.

There are 2 oil nipples one behind the T bar lock and one on the outer edge of the table.

Thanks all for the replies. It is a Soba 5 inch, fits the mill ok 90mm slots for the tee nuts and central fixing. The fixing points was a concern as I could not get a satisfactory answer from the seller but Ron has the same mill so took a chance.
