      Hello,

my name is Werner and I am from Germany.

Since 30 years I own an eraly Myford Super 7 lathe from 1955 with gearbox. Unfortunately it is the “early type “ gearbox with soft gears.
By profession I am mechanical engineer and before this I made an aprenticeship as mechanic.

I use the Myford for building parts for my motorcycle, a 1955 BMW with sidecar.

The pre owner, an engine builder, grinded the bed once. Meanwhile the precision to achieve 0.004” needs a lot of “feeling” so I think it’s time to start a refurbishment.

For this I ask for some articles from Model Engineer and Model Engineers Workshop.

I will place this request in the section General Questions.

      Best regards

      Werner

Welcome along Werner from a fellow motorcyclist. Many years ago I had a BMW R50S, a very smooth bike but I was to young to appreciate just how good it was. I now spend my time making and repairing bits for my old bikes.

Hello Chris Evans and the others,

thank you for your warm welcome.
The BMW R50S was even in Germany a very rare bike, so i think much more rare in UK.
With 7600 rpm it had a much higher rpm than the standard R50 with 5600 rpm.

Since 1980 I own a R50 from 1955 but meanwhile "upgraded" with a 750 cc plainbearing engine, gearbox and final drive.

                Werner

Hello Werner and welcome to this excellent forum. I'm afraid that I'm no longer a motorcyclist but I have owned several Austin Sevens, made under licence in Germany by BMW as the Dixi.

If you have any questions you have but to ask.

                  Brian

Hello Werner, re the R50S I have recently found out only 12 were officially imported to the UK. I have no way of knowing if this is a real fact but the bike was rare as even a standard R50 was out of reach due to high cost.

                      Hi Chris,
interesting information. Where did you get this information from?
                      My BMW book says 1634 R50S and 32546 R50 + R50/2

The imported number was just a comment from a Vintage club member, your book seems to have hard facts and is more likely correct. The bikes sold here a similar cost to a new VW Beetle ? That information was also from the same source. Chris.

The BMW pricelist in 1962 says for a R50S = 3535 Mark, R50 Standard = 3130 Mark and for a VW Beetle Standard = 4200 Mark. the BMW top model R69S says 4030 Mark. So to drive BMW was expensive.

Werner, is your reference book giving the number of machines produced ? I doubt if big quantities where sold in the UK.
