      Happy New Year everybody

      MYFORD VMB MILL

I am looking for information on the Original variable speed motor

These mills were sold by Myford, they came ready to plug into 240 volt single phase household supply. The system was based on a Danfoss variable speed unit housed in a robust black box. This box was bolted to the left hand side of the mill stand , together with a 220 volt 3 phase motor which was controlled using the box. I have looked on numerous sites on the net, including "Tony Griffiths LATHES' site , but I can't find the info I require.. I am trying to get the exact spec of the original 3 phase motor,.I.E. HP AMPS ETC. Does anyone have one of these mill set up as above? If so is the any chance I could get the info of the motor plate please ? or a photo of it please? I am very grateful for your assistance.. many thanks Ray

          Ray,

Don't get hung up on what Myfords supplied as they were probably working to a price and supplier.

Things have moved on rapidly from those day and you are free to pick and choose what suits you and not what they used.

          On a VMB I'd personally go for a 0.75Kw [ 1 HP ] motor or even a 1.1Kw [ 1 1/2 HP ] unit and inverter to suit.

There are many packages out there.

            hi John

Thank you for the reply, Yes I agree the motor sizes you suggest would be ideal for the VMB..I have acquired a brand new unused variable motor control unit that came off a Myford VMB Mill. There are no instructions or specifications with it… Before I connect it to a motor, I am trying to locate the original motor spec . thank you ray

Ray, if you have a VMB (or if you haven't!) and want a motor to match the drive and you got the drive from the eBay source I suspect, you might just make an offer for the motor too, as the machine the seller is left with is no good without the drive! But anyway it isn't that critical, the motor was probably 3/4 HP, 230 v 50 Hz delta connected and the drive should be happy with practically any similar motor. I have just fitted an old 3/4 horse Brook Crompton motor on my VMB with an Altivar 28 1 kW drive and it is very happy.

No specific knowledge of that unit but if it's basically a repackaged Danfoss inverter you should be able to work out its specification by googling the model of the inverter. You may have to dismantle the outer casing of the unit to get to it, but it's pretty much 100% guaranteed that inside will be a bog standard inverter, could even be one from their current range or covered in their 'legacy literature'- at least the basic model/series name should be obvious.

Likely the inverter unit will have a nameplate of its own with HP/kW/voltage all clearly marked, but if not you can google the inverter name, download the literature for that series, and work out which exact model it is from its external dimensions – size will go up with horsepower.

In any case you will need the model name/series to download the manual for it – whatever settings Myford programmed in may not suit your set-up, and there's also a good chance the inverter may be able to display its own model number or other info which lets you determine its spec if all else fails, but you'll need the manual to work out how to get this info!

                          Hi Ray

I have only just signed up to the site and saw your post and ignore this if too late etc.

I have a VMB which was originally single phase and I swapped the motor out for a 3 phase motor so I could use the Tesla controller system from a single phase supply. This works a treat giving me variable speed.

I now have a single phase motor surplus to requirements.

I have also fitted DRO to the VMB using simple vernier scales cabled off to a large readout.

I can let you have more details on these aspects if you want. I like the VMB but the Z axis certainly keeps your arms fit winding it up and down. Think I need a plan to motorise this in the future.

                          Kind regards

                          Alan
