        I got a couple of shorter ones from Lidl last year about 18 in. Also lower wattage probably but the same 2pin extension option. I've been hoping they would repeat them as the often do as I could do with a bunch. Only downside is the light is very harsh bright white so I prefer an 'old fashioned' fluorescent in the anglepoise.

          Tim is absolutely right! A horizontal surface is just waiting to have stuff put on it.

          One day, I'll get round to sorting those tins and boxes with miscellaneous items in them; IF I live that long!

            I seem to remember horizontal surfaces in my house, as well as workshop… I see glimpses of them now and then!

            I have four of those multi-drawer storage units, saved from the skip at work. Very flimsy steel pressings with brittle plastic drawers, but I nested four in a wheeled stand I made both for a Warco sheet-metal former with these storage units below. The units are lettered A to D, the drawers numbered though by the corner ones only; 1 to N in each unit.

            The idea…. assuming similar longevity… Rather than individually labelling each drawer, prepare a printed, alphabetical index, using a spread-sheet and MoD-style nomenclature*, so that it's easy to locate particular items, but also to facilitate moving or changing drawers and contents. The number refers to location, not specific drawers.

            * E.g., " Nuts. M6, St/Stl . Nyloc ". [Unit & Drawer] "A .15 " (1 row, 6 columns on the list)

            Round Tuits, Spare Moments…. I think I had some. Now, where did I put them?

              Watch out – junk expands to fill the space available …

              Tim

              Strange word junk . Normally refers to trash; waste, or things of no value. The lady of the house will often refer to the contents of the workshop as junk, whereas we know better. We know that those pieces of metal and wood that's been shifted around for donkeys years will come in handy one day, and you'll definitely know that the day after you've binned it!

                Think very hard before you enlarge your workshop !! Listen to the voice of experience !

                Many moons ago, I operated from the basement of a house, with a floor area of about 100 sq ft and a height of 7 ft. and I could find everything I wanted.

                Fast forward, and I moved house ,built a new garage/workshop 40ft x 20 ft inside which is now filled with stuff which will come in "useful" some day, [if I live long enough ] At this stage I cannot even get my van into the "garage"

                Someone once said that "Junk expands to fill the room available " Never was a truer word spoken !

                See my post above re the tidy workshop !

                It,s very difficult to know where to draw the line [I,m still drawing it }

                Dear God ,why do we ever get involved in things like this ?

                  Just as you guys suggested any extra space doesnt last long especially when you add a larger machine.

                  Its not too bad at the moment, once the mini lathe is gone I will be left with 15 sq feet of bench space and I built the 0-4-0 in not much more than 4 sq feet of bench so ok "for now" how long it will last however….?
