        Hi all

I had a software programme which I got from the internet many years ago, which covered thread ,information also,Gear form and cutting info ,Dividing head calculations etc. My problem is two fold ,one I had it installed on my old XP run computer,Which went to our local recycling facility a few months back . ,I tried to load and run it on my new Windows 8.1 computer but it failed to work so I discarded the programme , Fatal error. Now a few months down the line I realise how very useful it was and would appreciate if some one might point me in the direction to rediscover it .I have searched extensively on the net but can not find it. Unfortunately I cannot remember its correct name or address. However it was intended for model or Home engineers .If found I will load it on to my Win 7 Laptop Regards

Didn't work for me in Windows 8 (with my Windows 7 lookalike skin, start menu etc) but I fixed it easily enough. May need to do the same for genuine W7 installations?.

To unzip the files (run the self-extracting zip file), I had to go to the downloads directory, right click the downloaded file and select "troubleshoot compatibility". Then I was able to select "XP service pack 3" mode and it extracted OK into the C:Program FilesModel Engineers Utilities directory. However, it didn't create a start menu item, so I had to right click the application and create a shortcut (on the desktop in my case). I like to drag icons onto the taskbar at the bottom to keep my desktop clear for other rubbish.

Looks a bit clunky but might have its uses.

Does windows 8 have "Windows Virtual PC" to allow running of a virtual "Windows XP" session?

              Ed. I'm still using Win-7.

It (and Vista and W7) all have compatibility modes that go back to W95 and work here.

Find the .exe file or the shortcut to it, right click and select 'troubleshoot compatibility' and work back through the windows versions until you get one that works reliably.

P S. Who is perfectly happy with W8.1 and can't see what the fuss is about…

P.P.S. Although my screen saver has the rotating words 'Windows 3.1'.

Hi Neil, not the compatibility mode, I mean the virtual session where you can run a windows XP session in a window on the desktop of a later windows version. I have it on Windows 7.

                  Ed.

Ah, just found the answer:  Windows 8 uses something called Hyper-V but doesn't support XP.

I made a big mistake, buying a 64 bits version of Windows 7, got any ideas for a conversion program to run 32/16 bit programs? i don't want to pay MicroSoft £180 for the home Profesional version.

You should be ok running 32 bit software Frank. The issues I have found with 64bit OS is if a program requires a hardware driver, then the OS expects to see a 64bit driver.

                        Gentlemen,

I downloaded the file John S gave the link for into my Windows 8.1 notebook, opened it with Winzip and now have it pinned to my Toolbar and it runs without any problems at all, is it me or are others looking for issues that are not there wink

If you insist on running the 32 bit version of Windows you can only make use of 3GB of memory which can be a bit limiting. There are other limitations too. As Ed says, you can run 32 bit fine inside 64 bit Windows. No reason not to go with W64.

I installed Oracle VM Virtualbox software to run alternative OSs on my Windows desktop PC. It allows me to run Linux Ubuntu from within Windows (within a window). Costs nothing, installs easily and works well. You can install any number of alternative OSs – as long as you have the install disks obviously.

Hi, I've just downloaded the link that JS posted onto my Windows 8.1 64 bit and it seems to be working OK, haven't had to use any compatible modes or anything else extra.

                            Regards Nick.

                              That's annoying.

All my computers are 64bit W7 or W8 and I've no problems running any modernish programs. I have some really old ones that woun't run but that's not a 32/64bit problem, they just don't run on later versions of windows.

Try installing a Linux distro such as Mint then try running those old apps on WINE.

No need, I usually have the updated version or don't need the program any more.
